Notes

"First and sole edition. Presentation copy from the author, inscribed on the front free endpaper: ""With the Compliments of the Author""; pencilled ownership inscription of ""J. G. Watt"" on facing pastedown. Rare: not in Copac and OCLC cites only one copy (University of Texas at Austin). Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Jocelyn Kennedy Wallis served with the Manchester Regiment and the Connaught Rangers, before transferring to the 20th Deccan Horse (Hart's Army List 1906), promoted to major by 1917; created OBE in the 1923 Birthday Honours. In 1921-22 he was military attaché and then consul at Meshed (modern day Mashhad), in the north-eastern corner of Iran near the border with Turkmenistan, at a time when ""Anglo-Soviet rivalries in eastern Iran... gave a new dimension to the Great Game"" (Pirouz Mojtahed-Zadeh, Small Players in the Great Game: the settlement of Iran's eastern borderlands and the creation of Afghanistan, 2004, p. 117). Some Silhouettes in Persia - originally
published
in the
Journal of the
Indian
Army
Service Corps -
is an
engaging
series of reflections on
Persian
life, literature and manners, including pieces on
the fourgon
(the ""four-wheeled, spring-less wagon... a marvel of
primitive engineering""), the sarai, the camel, the Persian garden, and, naturally in light of the Great Game, mentions of ""the Bolsheviks""."
